Panic and anxiety attacks have a biological role in each and every one of us. Most people can suppress this role to the point where there are no issues; however, some people continue to express this biological role in the form of an attack. To understand the biological role you have to understand the conditions in which humans lives under going back hundreds and hundreds of years.

Humans evolved with the commonly called the “fight or flight” ability. Fight or flight is the ability of the body to focus a rapid increase of adrenalin to either fighting an enemy for survival, or to outrun a dangerous situation. The task of fighting or running effectively worked off the adrenalin and help the person live another day.

In today’s world, we all still have the fight or flight ability inside us. However, not too many of us are faced with life and death situations each day where we can use it effectively. Instead, our biggest fears are now perhaps public speaking, or a final exam, as opposed to fighting in a war or running from something that is trying to hurt you.

In short, we are still experiencing the adrenaline rush, but now we have to sit quietly while it is happening to us. Theirs is no running or fighting, yet the same levels of adrenaline could be hitting our systems. Most people can handle the adrenaline with some simple nervousness as a side effect; however, some people go into a full-blown anxiety attack.

Anxiety Attack Symptoms - Identifying a Frightening Experience

Anxiety attacks usually last less than 10 minutes, but within that time they can take a person on an emotional roller coaster ride that will leave their heart racing and scared out of their wits, many times totally stopping that person in their tracks.

These types of attacks are something that the greater part of society really doesn’t understand, or quite frankly believe exists. It’s very common to hear people minimize the severity of someone suffering from these attacks because they just don’t realize how real these are, and how scary they can be.

Having to deal with a confused society tends to only make matters worse when the attacks do happen.
Let’s go over some common symptoms to help you recognize when an attack may be happening or about to happen. This is not an entire list of symptoms for these types of attacks, but it is some of the most common. These symptoms are:

- Pounding heartbeat – where you can feel it
- Increased sweating – sudden and uncontrollable
- Dizziness and nausea – may feel like throwing up or fainting
- Breathing difficulty – like something is smothering you
- Numbness of the face - tingling sensation about the face
- Fear of losing self control
- Feeling the need to start crying

Sometimes these symptoms gradually work up to an anxiety attack, so if you understand the symptoms, you may be able to be more prepared. Unfortunately, many of these attacks start so quickly you don’t have time to see it coming, but at least you will know what is happening to you, which can provide some level of comfort.
